The Fall is a great place to start checking off some of these items before the snow starts to fly and the temperature plummets.
- Get on top of those drafts. Adopting a Fall home maintenance routine is about saving money on heating costs and making sure you and your family will be comfortable during the winter months. Window and door drafts are one of the biggest enemies for the average homeowner. Holding a lit candle around door frames and window sills is a great way to see if there’s an issue since the flame will flicker with a draft. These drafts are easily corrected by going to the local home improvement store and buying some relatively inexpensive caulking.
- Check off the roof and gutters. If you can do so safely, getting up on the roof of your home to clean the gutters and replace any worn or missing shingles is something that’s best done before the freeze/thaw cycle of the winter begins. If you need to use a ladder, make sure it’s properly secured and you have someone spotting you.
When the leaves start to turn, you should be thinking about getting your home ready for the onslaught of the colder weather. Getting into a Fall home maintenance routine is a great way to protect the equity you’ve got building up in your house.
