You learn an awful lot when you buy a house of your own and not everything is about financial matters like refinancing a mortgage. Although, if you talk to many homeowners they will tell you the best thing you can do is learn a little bit about simple repairs and maintenance so you don’t have to go to the bank and ask for a huge amount of money to fix something large.

Knowing something about the pipes that carry the water around your house and take waste away is a good idea. For example, because we live in Canada, we can expect exposed pipes to freeze in the winter time. If you don’t remedy a situation like that or prevent it, a frozen pipe can burst and cost you a pretty penny in repairs.

There are several measures that you can take to avoid this situation. If you keep a trickle of water running through the faucets in your house during cold weather, the pipes that are exposed to outside walls from the inside in places like the basement won’t freeze. If your basement is unheated, you might want to make sure to keep a door ajar so warm air can find its way down there in the winter months. If your pipes do freeze, there are several things you can do to thaw them out before they burst and you need to call a plumber.

If you’re not comfortable aiming a heating gun or hairdryer at the frozen pipe, you might want to try wrapping it in rags and pouring hot water over the top. Your local do-it-yourself store should sell the kind of foam wrap that should solve the problem permanently. Understanding these proactive measures can save you thousands of dollars in repairs.
